Having just read two other books in Beth Williamson (Emma Lang is her other pen name) in a different series (Malloy Family) and finding them five-star reads, I was stunned to find this title, published by Kensington (a big publisher) to be fraught with problems). BIG problems. Everything from word choices that weren't invented yet in American English (like "okay"), and household "inventions" that were premature. Formatting sucked: scene breaks had no differentiation. No blank lines, no lack of indentation, no symbol to show a new scene (except for two or three places throughout, yet FAR from consistent).Matthew is a good guy. He's doing the best he can to hold the family together, manage a monster of an adult sister (jilted by a should've been fiance), and cope with the very recent deaths of his parents and disappearance of his youngest brother. His plate is full. But he's 25. Not young. In 1830's, he's a full grown man. So to find him unwilling to face problems head-on and act immediately, rather than think "he'd have to talk to her (either wife or sister), but it would have to wait" seemed like something a much younger, much less mature man would do. I wanted to smack him the third time and fourth time he did the same thing. He knew better.
The sex scenes caught me off guard but only because when in the virginal, completely inexperienced viewpoint of his bride, she's thinking terms that no clueless virgin would know. Maybe him, who'd had plenty of experience, but not her. By about 1/3 of the way through the book, I'd started to trip over repeats, telling me information I already knew. Inconsistencies made me shake my head (where was the editor? where is Beth's amazing writing?) like first saying there is no water in the house (pump is outside) before they get to the ranch, but at 1/3 of the way through the story, they're pumping water into a bucket in the kitchen sink. Between repeated information (come on! Trust me for 15 minutes to remember it the first time!). The repeats were about several different subjects/thoughts and continued over and over again. Drove me batty, especially when they were in Houston together, and Mr. Prentiss (in the land office) became Mr. Stinson (the bad guy) through the ENTIRE scene. They're even talking about what land is owned by Mr. Stinson, and the land agent is continually "Mr. Stinson", all by accident. A few times both Matt and Hannah acted so foolishly, so STOOOPIDLY (no motivation), I wanted to slap them silly.
Despite formatting and editing issues, the book had much to recommend it. It's a moderately strong opening to The Circle Eight Series, which I bought in whole some time ago when they were all on sale. I'll likely keep reading the rest of them, and crossing my fingers they improve. This book was apparently, best as I can tell from copyright dates, written long after the author's Malloy Family Series. I don't understand why it's so awkward, rough, and poorer in quality than the Malloy books.

Can't wait to read the rest of the series. Good storyline and well defined characters. Me heart went out to Matt and Hannah.
This book was a page turner. Book one in the series and it was great. Enjoyed reading about the whole family. Loved the characters.
Matthew was the oldest. He needed a wife and her name must be Hannah. You meet the best people over turnips. Hannah and Matthew married and now the hard part begins. This book shows the perils and the love of a Texas family. Enjoy!
This is the first novel in the Circle Eight Series. It introduces the Graham family ,I read this in one day and I am now reading the other books in the series. They are all action packed and maintain the reader's interest. The stories are about a family full of love and support for each other. I like the way the author involves all the characters that were in previous books in each book so you feel like you know them and how their lives are progressing.
I found this book to be unexpectedly good. Most old west stories are either boring or make the women look like know nothing's especially in the sex department. This book brought the modern times together with the 1800's and made for a very good read. Thank you Ms Lang. I look forward to reading more of your books in this series.
The storyline has potential but the book was poorly written. The author bounces between character perspectives with any breaks. Places in the book that should transition appear as one paragraph right after the other. The sex sciences were uncomfortably written with words like shaft and nub. I will not read any more works by this author. I would not recommend the book. If I could have, I would have given this book zero stars.
I bought this book after reading the The Circle Eight Caleb, which I got for free after reading a synopsis. I so enjoyed the characters and the author's writing that I was moved to buy the first book in the series. Each book can stand alone as a satisfying novel. The author writes descriptively and well. I didn't find errors in grammar or spelling, which I have to admit, are a turnoff for me. Reading the history of Matthew and Hannah and the twists and turns in their relationship and thier lives was a satisfying several experience. I have already purchased another book in the series and am looking forward to reading it as well.
