After reading the synopsis, I knew that this was going to be a hard one to get through. Any book that has someone battling cancer, fictional or otherwise, automatically strikes a chord with me. I've read some of Missy Johnson's other work and this was very different but not in a bad way at all. This was a much more emotional read than I am used to when I read her books. The book follows three life-long friends Seth, Emily and Andy. Here comes the sadness; Andy is dying of cancer, at this point in time there are no more treatment options and he is running out of time. Here in lies part of the rub...Andy and Emily have been dating for years. She has been by his side through both of his bouts of cancer. Seth has been there as well, for Emily because he is in love with her. Tired of laying around waiting to die, Andy makes all the arrangements for Seth and Emily to complete his bucket list- with him cheering on from the sidelines.
Some of these scenes were so well written and detailed that I felt I was there with them. When they visit the tattoo parlor I cheered with Andy as he got in his final screw you to the disease had me laughing with tears running down my face. And that wasn't the only time. As The bond between these friends was deep and true. I could really relate to their struggle to say goodbye and simultaneously hang on.
I don't know if I can say who the circumstances were harder for. Andy who knew he was dying and had to find a way to say goodbye and try to make it ok (as ok as it can be) for those left behind. Emily who still loved Andy but wasn't in love with him in the same way. But wanted to be there for him and didn't want to let go of the version of Andy that he used to be. Or Seth, who swallowed his heart for seven years so his best friend could be happy with the girl he loves. He promised to be there for Emily so she wouldn't be alone (she has suffered a lot of loss in her life), but who was going to be there for him to lean on.
When the truth of Seth's feelings are revealed by none other than Andy, my heart broke for all of them. It forced such a huge, yet understandable rift in the dynamic of all the relationships. Eventually, Seth and Emily figure things out for themselves. But that is not the end of the obstacles that face them. They know that they love each other but is it more than a friendship love?
This book was nothing if not gut wrenching and beautiful all at once. Brooke Cumberland took a situation that was ugly, dying always is even if it is expected, and worked her magic. She allowed Seth and Emily to find beauty from the ashes of what their life once was. I found myself wanting more and more of their story as they moved forward, together.

omigod! The Feels! This book broke my heart. I cried, I laughed and my heart hurt so much. As someone who has lost numerous of loved ones to cancer, this book killed me. Ive wanted to read Out of Reach for a while and was just now able to read it. I dont even know where to start with this review, Im still reeling from all the feels LOL I really loved Missy Johnson's writing style. She really knew how to grab her readers and have them emotionally invested. Reading Andy, Seth and Emily's story was refreshing in some sense. Knowing that no matter what they didnt let their connections fade, they loved each other, all three of them. The couldn't have been closer friends if they tried. Their friendship and love for one another is something you rarely see, even in books. I know Im reading these books out of order but I cant wait to read the rest of this series. I hope to see more of these two characters in books to come, even if its just snippets.
*****Contain Spoilers so please don't read it any further if you don't want spoilers.
Seth is so sweet, patient and selfless. I was disappointed in Emily. She had always have feelings for Seth but once she found out about his feelings for her, all the feelings she ever had for him just disappeared! I did not like the way Emily treated Seth once the truth came out. I would have enjoyed this book so much more had Emily showed Seth some love. It was mostly Seth chasing her. At the end, I was left with Emily just settled with Seth because Andy was gone. It was Andy this, Andy that, Andy would have wanted this. Sure, I get that Emily wanted and got a tattoo to remember Andy but what about Seth? Was Seth not worthy enough to Emily because she didn't ink his name on her like she did to Andy. Lastly, Seth purposed to Emily with Andy's grandmother's ring! It was as Seth was written as a replacement for Andy. Seth deserved better!
